My original career plans started with attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh with the intent to pursue a career in graphic arts and design. I quickly realized the talent around me was far better than mine, so I decided to move on to something else.
In high school, I spent every summer working in construction. The jobs taught me work ethic and how important a job is to the client/customer. After my art aspirations came to an end, I went after what I knew and secured a job as a helper for a electrical contractor. I applied the work ethic learned during my high school years to learn the electrical craft via on the job training and found the work enjoyable. I soon realized I needed to learn more about electricity and enrolled in night trade school night classes and learned as much as possible.
Upon completion of trade school, I landed a job at one of Pittsburgh's largest electrical contractors. My responsibilities were comprehensive including doing the actual work, bidding jobs, explaining the details of the work to the customer and making sure the client was satisfied.
My art background came into play by offering creative solutions to client’s electrical challenges. A design background taught me the principles of light and helped me to explain to customers what light can do for a specific project and how to utilize light for optimal results.
